Stamm wins, SAGA Insurance heads east

5 March 2007

Swiss sailor Bernard Stamm won the second leg of the Velux Five Oceans on Saturday by almost 3,000 nautical miles. He has now won two legs of the three-leg race and, barring accidents, looks set to retake the title.

His nearest competitor in the round the world event is Kojiro Shiraishi on Spirit of Yukoh who, according to reports, is expected to arrive in Norfolk, Virginia late next week.

In third place, Unai Basurko, on Pakea, is 660 miles ahead of Graham Dalton in A Southern Man – AGD.

Over 200 miles behind Dalton is Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in SAGA Insurance. Sir Robin, an old hand at solo circumnavigations, blames his position on tactics taken last week when facing a huge high-pressure system.

Unfortunately this has left Sir Robin heading east, and finding it difficult to edge north.
